Thanksgiving 2010 in New York City

As I mentioned in my last post, way back in April, we were fortunate to obtain enough miles to take us to the island of Manhattan...and we finally made it!  And, for the Thanksgiving holiday!  THANKfully, some of the decorations were already beginning to be displayed - like these giant strand of lights.

We arrived close to noon on the eve of Thanksgiving, which gave us time to wander around and take in all of the sites and smells of the city before trekking off to our "must see" pre-planned activities.  One particular smell, from a street vendor, struck me quite odd.  I couldn't get over how it's sweet aroma enticed me, though I'm certain if I had taken just a bite I would have not been able to keep it down.  I never knew something could smell so good, yet repel my senses at the same time.

 A live Statue of Liberty

St. Patrick's Cathedral was not far from our hotel and held gorgeous architectural detail, inside and out.

Stained glass windows covered every exterior door and wall.

The spaciousness of this building was in great contrast to the feeling received from the wall of buildings outside.

As you walk along the exterior walls inside the church, a story, carved from some sort of resin (I would guess), is told of Christ's journey to his death, carrying the cross.  These were quite amazing and moving.  Again, the detail is so impressive.  Here are just a few samples.

Jesus is nailed to the cross.
Jesus falls the second time.
Jesus dies on the cross.

More to come soon, hopefully.  I plan to post our trip in sections so, maybe, I can actually get it done! : )
